Extracurricular Activities: Crucial for Your Child’s Future

As back-to-school season begins for your young student, so does band, football, cheerleading, academic UIL, or whatever extracurricular events are the best fit. Here are a few reasons it’s important for your child’s future to pursue afterschool activities now:

  1. Extracurricular involvement promotes academic performance!
We’re sure you’ve heard that afterschool activities keep older students involved in their schoolwork. But did you know that these activities also solidify the learning process for young children? According to The National Center for Education Statistics, “Extracurricular activities provide a channel for reinforcing the lessons learned in the classroom, offering students the opportunity to apply academic skills in a real-world context.” Although some fun after school programs or sports may seem unrelated to “learning,” children use these activities to develop important social and team-development skills!
  2. Starting early makes your child competitive later!
Today, sports programs and other competitive activities are introduced to children at an earlier age than ever before. Does this mean that you should push your little one to become a musical prodigy or future pro-athlete? Not necessarily. However, once your child shows interest in a sport, art, or activity, it’s important to start forming these skills as early as possible. The sooner your child identifies and cultivates his or her unique skills, the better off he or she will be down the road when it comes time for college and scholarship applications.
